Ultimate Meditation Space Guide: How to Create a Sanctuary

What if you could create the perfect meditation space in your home?

Well, you absolutely can!

In this all-encompassing guide, we’ll discuss why you should make meditation a regular practice and how to create a space so inviting that it entices you to drop all your distractions and retreat from the world every time you pass by it.

I’ll also provide a list of supplies and tools that will help you get the most out of your meditation.

So, if you’re scratching your head when it comes to HOW to create a spectacular and sacred space for your practice and left wondering:

Does it matter which room I use?

Can I convert my she shed into a meditation haven?

How big should my space be?

And what supplies do I need?

Then this is a post you need to read.

I’m going to walk you through how to set up a spot in your home that inspires you to step away from the distractions of the outside world and explore something far more important — your inner world.

While it’s true that you can meditate anywhere, we all deserve to carve out a special space for ourselves when the world becomes a little too much to handle, we need some inspiration, or we just need a calm place to retreat to when our anxiety level gets to be a bit much.

And having a designated space in your home for the specific act of meditation and some essential supplies can increase your success in developing and deepening your practice.

Beyond the Basics: When Outdoors Isn’t an Option

But before we get started, let me say that fundamentally you do not NEED anything in order to meditate.

Buddha sat under a tree wrapped in pretty much nothing more than a loincloth. So, the only thing you NEED to meditate is yourself and your breath.

And let’s be honest, meditating outdoors surrounded by mother nature, is by far the best way to activate your senses and connect to your Self.

But we can’t always get outside. And so, carving out a special nook in your home specifically dedicated to your meditation practice is the next best thing.

So with that said, let’s take a look at how to create a sacred space of serenity indoors for the optimal mediation experience.

Benefits of Developing a Regular Meditation Practice

Hopefully, by now we’re all aware of how meditation benefits our physical health and mental well-being.

But for those that need a refresher course, here is an abbreviated list of some of the many health benefits meditation offers us.

Physical and Mental Health Benefits:

  • Reduces stress, aggression, anxiety, and fear
  • Improves focus and mental clarity
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Improves circulation
  • Enhances sleep patterns, learning, and memory
  • Increases self-awareness
  • Reduces negative emotions
  • Increases imagination and creativity
  • And can help with conditions like ADHD, certain psychological disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, depression, social anxiety, ulcerative colitis, chronic diseases, addictions, pain, and even weight loss

And these benefits don’t just end when your meditation session ends. You carry them with you throughout your day.

So, if you’re not already, it’s time to get on board with practicing meditation on a regular basis. Because let’s face it, meditation is literally the best thing you can do for yourself.

Meditation is the Ultimate Act of Self Care

Yes, I said it. Sitting and just ‘being’ is the BEST thing you can do for yourself. It’s not selfish or lazy.

We’re so busy ‘doing’ — spreading ourselves thin and filling every second of every day with activities and harmful mental chatter — that we’re killing ourselves with stress.

We have become a society where multi-tasking is rewarded. It’s a ‘quantity over quality’ mentality. We’re being trained to hustle instead of slow down. Our modern way of life makes it nearly impossible to focus on one thing.

Is it any surprise that disorders like anxiety and ADHD have become commonplace in today’s world?

With all the distractions in our world, our attention is being scattered in far too many different directions. And we’ve become so addicted to our devices and social media that turning inward and connecting with ourselves on a deeper level is becoming harder and harder to do.

But that’s exactly the reason why we need a sacred place of solitude that we can retreat to and practice meditation on a regular basis. A place where we can recharge and recenter ourselves.

If you’re new to meditation or need more convincing of its benefits, check out my article, Meditation Basics For Beginners: Benefits And Ultimate How-To Guide.

Now let’s look at why it’s so important to dedicate a specific space to your meditation practice.

3 Reasons Why You Need a Dedicated Space for Meditation

As I said, you can meditate anywhere.

But here are 3 reasons why having a designated meditation area can help deepen your practice tremendously and remind you to practice stillness on a regular basis.

1. Entices You to Retreat from Daily Distractions

Think about it. At the end of a long day, don’t you just want to crawl into your nice, warm bed?

Why do you think that is? Because it’s where you recharge your batteries. It’s where you retreat to when you don’t want to face the day. It’s your private oasis of security.

Do you think it’s a coincidence that we make it the coziest, most inviting place in the house?

It’s the places we love that we want to keep going back to and want to spend time in.

That’s why it’s important that you create a meditation space that you love. This is your personal sanctuary. It’s your refuge from the outside world and away from all your worries and stresses.

It should be a place you feel comfortable in. A space you WANT to spend time in. Most importantly, a space that soothes your soul.

So, create a space that makes YOU feel good and that gets you excited to meditate!

Whoa, calm down. Not too excited. This is supposed to be a tranquil space.🧘‍♀️😊

But when you pass by this special spot, it should draw you in and tempt you to retreat from the distractions of your daily life.

2. Trains Your Mind to Relax Faster

Another amazing reason why you should create a special spot in your home to meditate is that when you meditate in the same space on a regular basis, over time you’ll infuse it with positive, calming energy.

Not only are you charging the room with this soothing energy, but you’re also programming your body and neural network to calm down whenever you enter that space.

You will begin to breathe deeper and feel more relaxed before you even begin your practice. Essentially you’re training your mind to enter a meditative state more quickly.

So, having a special ‘go-to’ spot dedicated to your spiritual practices is not only beneficial in training you to enter a meditative state quicker, but it can also help solidify your practice into a life-long habit.

3. Making Meditation a Lasting Habit

We’re experts at making excuses for not doing something. And in the beginning, your mind is going to come up with loads of convincing reasons why it’s impossible to meditate on a regular basis.

So, do yourself a favor.

Cross off one of those excuses by carving out a special place for yourself in your home (no matter how small) where you can be alone. Because not having a dedicated spot for meditation can hinder your commitment to meditate daily.

Establishing a habit requires consistency. And in order to make meditation a long-lasting habit, you’ll need to create a routine.

  • Make an agreement with yourself to meditate at the same time, same place every day.
  • Choose a time that’s going to be easy to commit to. (Some people find it best to meditate first thing early in the morning.)
  • And then experiment and find what time of the day works best for you and try to stick to it.

Deciding Where to Meditate

Alright, now it’s time to find the perfect spot in your home to transform into your transcendental oasis.

You don’t need an entire room. (Although that’s awesome if you have a spare room to dedicate entirely to your meditation and spiritual practices.)

Just find a quiet, low-traffic area of your home. A corner in your bedroom, on your patio, or heck even a closet can be transformed into an amazing serene space. Get creative!

If your space lacks four walls, consider using a screen or curtains to create privacy. Just make sure it’s a secluded area free from any external distractions.

Here are a couple more ideas on how to create an area of seclusion if you’re short on space:

But really, the size of the space is completely up to you. A small meditation space can provide comfort and feel like your own personal cocoon. While a larger space may create a feeling of expansion and freedom.

And that’s all there is to it when selecting your new go-to ‘happy place’.

Decluttering and Preparing Your Meditation Space

Now that you’ve chosen the perfect spot, it’s time to set the stage. Prepare your meditation space by clearing out the clutter.

Less is more when it comes to your personal sanctuary. Clutter can cause you to feel anxious, making it more difficult to relax (both physically and mentally). A messy space can actually induce increased levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.

And I think we can all agree that is the exact opposite of what anyone wants in a meditation space.

You may also want to consider painting your space in your favorite, calming colors. Anything that energetically puts you at ease.

As far as the actual colors go, it’s completely up to you. Many people find light, neutral shades are the most calming. While others may feel safe and at ease in a darker palette.

There is no perfect color combination. We all have different tastes. But it’s worth noting that if the space you’ve chosen to meditate in is a color that makes you feel uneasy, then you’re probably not going to want to spend a whole lot of time in there. And you’re certainly not going to be able to calm your mind in that room.

Just saying. So, choose a color palette that feels right for you.

But no worries if repainting isn’t an option. You can always decorate with artwork that makes you feel at ease.

Lighting

Lighting is incredibly important when trying to create the right mood for your setting. So, give some thought to what type of light is right for your space.

You can use any lighting option that makes you feel the most at ease. Usually, warm dim light tends to work well. It’s more calming. You just don’t want anything that’s too harsh.

That’s why natural light is such a great option (if you have windows to work with). But maybe you’d prefer a dimly lit room with candles or some twinkle lights. Or maybe you like both options.

So, curtains might be something to think about. Will you need sheer curtains or something heavier to filter the light?

These are all things to consider when designing your meditation space.

Check out the Meditation Essentials and Supplies section down below for more suggestions.

Add Natural Elements

Nature is extremely soothing and healing. And since we can’t always go out into nature to meditate, bringing it indoors is the next best thing.

So, decorate your space with natural elements like fresh flowers or live plants. It’ll not only make your room look pretty but having a green, plant-filled space has tons of benefits too.

For instance, plants are natural air purifiers and powerful mood lifters to boot. Just being near them is such a great way to raise your vibration!

It’s also a good idea to incorporate each of the four elements — earth, air, fire, and water — into your meditation space to create balance.

Here are some wonderful options to consider:

Personalize Your Space

Personalizing your meditation space can help ground you in your practice. That’s why it can be helpful to incorporate items into your space that inspire you or help you connect inwardly (like a small statue of Buddha, a picture of a spiritual leader, or other significant trinkets).

Items like crystals, singing bowls, or mala beads can all be great tools for meditation, too. You can even create an altar or shrine if you’d like.

But none of these things are necessary unless they provide meaning for you.

Nourish Your Senses

Meditation requires you to engage all five of your senses while you connect with your mind, body, and spirit. So, if you want to create the perfect meditation space, it’s important to nourish all your senses.

This can help enhance your experience and deepen your meditation practice.

Touch

Make your space warm and inviting by incorporating comforting textures like rugs, pillows, and blankets.

Small Boho Mandala Circle Rug

When it comes to seating, you can opt for a meditation cushion or use a chair if you prefer not to sit on the floor. Whatever helps you maintain a proper posture.

Velvet Buckwheat Meditation Pillow

Because let’s face it, sitting still for long periods of time can be uncomfortable. So, creating a lush, bum-friendly space can make the experience more enjoyable. Making it much easier to stick with your practice.

And another way to incorporate the power of touch is through the use of mala beads. As a tactile point of focus, mala beads can help focus your meditation on an internal mantra.

Smell

Very often scent is used to enhance the meditation experience. Particularly essential oils can assist relaxation while burning sage or incense can help to cleanse the space.

Sound

Now let’s look at sound. This can be a powerful tool that can trigger the release of healing chemicals within the body. That’s why nature sounds, chanting, singing bowls, drumming, and mantras are so soothing to the soul and help focus the mind. Try incorporating some of these sounds into your space during meditation.

And recently I’ve been learning about the healing powers of the didgeridoo (you know, that Australian instrument that looks like a rain stick). It’s an incredible tool to heal the body and focus the mind.

Taste

A cup of herbal tea can do wonders to enhance your meditation practice. The act of sipping tea in and of itself can be meditative and can be enjoyed before meditation as a way of slowing down to prepare yourself to enter a calm state of mind.

Sight

We’ve already discussed the use of calming colors and special lighting. But other ways to engage your sense of sight include using candles, crystals, salt lamps, and even artwork. Anything that’s meaningful to you and puts you at ease.

Honor Your Sacred Space

You are creating a space that should be associated with stillness and devoted to your practice. This is your time for serenity and to connect to your true Self.

It is your sacred space.

So, honoring this space simply means using it only for the intended purpose of meditation, yoga, rest, or quiet time.

Don’t work, make phone calls, argue with your significant other, or scroll through social media in it. Refrain from doing any other activity in this area that isn’t of a mindful nature.

And if you live with your family or roommates, ask them to respect this area in your home and the time when you’re using it.
